In Lightning Console, the search window may close when a lookup search is performed

In a Lightning Console, when performing a lookup search in a subtab, the search window may open and then close, returning to the record page.
This can happen if the Activity Timeline is displayed on the record in the main tab (from which the subtab was opened), but hasn't been expanded to display additional Activities.
1. In the Console, open a record that has enough Activities in the timeline that scrolling the record would cause the timeline to display additional Activities. (Note: Scrolling down on this record so that the timeline is expanded will prevent the behavior from being reproduced in the subtab.)
2. Open a related record from this record so that a subtab is opened in the Console.
3. On the subtab, click to inline edit a lookup field on the record.
4. Insert a search term, then click the hourglass to open the search window.
Actual result: The search window may open, then immediately close.
Expected result: The search window remains open.
The easiest workaround is to perform the search again, as the window will remain open. Other workarounds are to scroll down to expand the related list on the main record before opening the subtab, or to open the record in the subtab directly (i.e. not as a subtab).
