support:caseArticles gives error on New Case page when used as a console sidebar

When you use a VF page with support:caseArticles component as a sidebar in service cloud console, it will display an error message upon case creation that says "This component is only supported for Case objects." despite the fact it's on a Case page. This error will prevent the rest of the sidebar contents from displaying as well.
1) Create a Visualforce page similar to the following
2) Modify the Case page layout to include the above VF page as a sidebar component
3) Go to the console and create a new case. On the detail entry page you'll see the error in the sidebar
If you continue on and save the case, the sidebar will refresh and display as expected once the case is created.
