Too much white space in Lightning UI

Lightning Experience

We are beginning the transition to Lightning, and are discovering that with the Lightning Experience turned on, a large amount of white space (padding or margin) is added to the interface, including our custom components, and this has a negative impact on productivity. Salesforce Classic is compact, so more information can fit into a given area, and that increases productivity because people don't have to scroll.

For example, on a Detail page for a custom object, in Salesforce Classic the page is 2909 pixels high in a desktop browser. The same record in Lightning is 4296 pixels high (47% increase in height). This is partly due to putting the labels and data fields on separate lines. One checkbox in Salesforce Classic with its label on the same line is 21 pixels high. The same checkbox area in Lightning is 41 pixels high (almost double!). The reason is that the label is above the checkbox in Lightning. This is wasting a lot of valuable vertical space and making users scroll a lot more.

(Just to clearly quantify this: the total screen area (width x height) for the same label and checkbox in Lightning is 83% larger than in the same browser with the same window size in Salesforce Classic).

Lightning looks nice, but this is really coming at the expense of productivity. I would like to urge the Lightning UI team to do some real-world usability testing before committing to this design. As it stands, I can't really move my users to it.

We hear you!  In Winter '18 (October release), we've done a lot of work to the Lightning UI based on feedback just like this.  We've made significant improvements to content density, contrast, readability, font heirarchy, color, etc.  More details andfinal  visuals for these changes will be released in August & September.
