Global (Universal) Picklists

Globalization & Custom Schema

User-added image

It would be fantastic if we could create our own custom "Universal Picklists", like the Industry picklist that is synchronized between Leads and Accounts. It would greatly streamline administration and data quality management, especially for organizations with extensive customizations of Salesforce.com.

It would also be great if you could extend the standard field picklists like Industry or Lead Source to custom objects, to preserve the synchronized picklist values from the standard objects on the custom objects as well for data consistency.

Update 7/12/10:  New image added per Alexander Sutherland's request.

Global (universal) picklists were in closed pilot in the Winter '16 release. In Spring '16 they move to open pilot. This means that they will be available in all DE and sandbox orgs, without requiring Salesforce to activate them, once Spring '16 is available everywhere. They are also available NOW in Spring '16 pre-release orgs. Get yours here:
    https://www.salesforce.com/form/signup/prerelease-spring16.jsp

Also, be sure to join the "Global, Restricted Custom Picklists" Chatter group, where you will find a specification of the planned GA release, FAQs, and be able to collaborate with other members of the community:

Clarification update: As noted above, Global Picklists are available in all Developer Edition and sandbox orgs in Spring '16. However, you will need to join the pilot program to get them activated in production.
