Easier Opportunity Revenue Stream Tracking

There must be an easier way to track revenue (where payment is realized over a period of time versus one bulk payment). The current solution offered by Salesforce is to clone the opportunity record for each date the payment will be received. Some of our contracts are 12-months, even 24-months. I can't imagine asking my Sales team to clone an opportunity 12 [or worse, 24 times], just so they can track their pipeline revenue. Needs a better solution!
