Sorting the Notes and Attachments Related List - and create custom fields

It would be nice to organize my notes and attachments. To do this I would like to add a custom field to attachments called document type. There, I would include values such as legal docs, sales docs, training docs, etc. Then it would be nice to be able to sort this related list by that type so that documents would be much easier to find on that particular record.
