We need to be able to change and add to the types of opportunity stages. From what I have read in other Posts Salesforce takes a very narrow view of this. An opportunity is either open or closed and once closed it is either won or lost. However it is possible for an opportunity to be closed and neither won or lost.
In our case we have a another company that we purchased that is focused on smaller implementations. An opportunity may start with the larger company and be referred to our sister company and we certainly want to track how much cross selling is occurring in order to validate the purchase of the company focused on the smaller tier market place.
Additionally one of our custom clients may be contemplating an upgrade and in the end just decide to renew their maintenance contract for their existing system and table the decision to a time when their budget can better handle the cost of a new system. We certainly want to track that for future sales activity to make sure we follow up when the client is in a better financial position.
