Opportunity Stage as a dependent picklist - is this possible?

I created a new field for an opportunity - Business Type.  Drop down is either New Account, Existing Customer, etc.  What I need are different stages for the different business type. I can't seem to select Stage as a dependent list.  Please see attached.  Is this possible?  User-added image

What you could do is only assign one record type to users profiles.  when they click new opportunity, it would just go to the default record type, when they click save, depending on which picklist value is selected for type you can use Process Builder to change the record type.

Users get the same simple experience, but you get the benefit of having the record types to enforce your business processes.

Hi Gina - if you wanted to have different stage picklist values based on business type, you would actually create two different opportunity record types, each with its own sales process (sets of stages).  With record types, you can then specify the available business types and set a default value.

Ex: Record Types would be New Account or Existing Customer, each with their own sales process and the type field would only have the one option set as default.

Thanks - I was hoping that was not the answer!  I have 9 different businesses using this, so it would be a lot of record types!  Yikes

Your only other option would be a Validation Rule, but that would not limit what they see, only what they are allowed to select
