lookup field optional

I'm working in Classic on a custom object (if that matters) and have a lookup field I'd like to be optional.  In setup the "Required" button is unchecked.  I can;t save the required because the field is blank.  Is there another step to make it Optional?
Thanks
Jim

Have you tried checking the page layout that the field is on? You can also make a field required on a page layout, so I would try checking whether that field is required on the layout!

There are 3 other places I can think of:
1) On the Page Layout itself, a field can be made "Required".  Check the Page Layout.
2) If the Lookup is a "Master-Detail" lookup, then I believe it would be required.  Have a look if the field is a standard "Lookup", or "Master-Detail".
3) A Validation Rule could be written to require a field value.  You'd know if this was happening, if you get a very specific error message when trying to save the record with no lookup value.  But you could check Validation Rules on the object nonetheless.

I hope this helps!  Good luck!

Please check in field properties in  page layout. In page layout, Hover the mouse over the field and you can see the spanner icon. Click on that and check if 'Required' is checked. If yes, uncheck it.
