Related List not showing in Lightning but is there for Classic

I'm having the same issue.  I have a custom object called Programs and it has a related list of Opportunities.  In Classic the user can see the related lists.

When the same user switches to Lightning and views the same record, they get nothing for the related list.

When I access the page as System Admin, I am able to see the related opportunities in the quick links.

This custom object only has one page layout in use and is assigned to the profile in question and the system admin.

Any ideas as to what permission or setting is missing that prevents the same related from showing in lightning that appear in classic?

Steve Dodd posted this response to a related issue (https://success.salesforce.com/answers?id=9063A000000l2GoQAI) and this solved my problem.  Funny that it wasn't impacting the related list in Classic, but it was in Lightning.

From Steve Dodd:
Check the Field Level Security of the Lookup or Master-Detail Relationship field that relates 'Opportunity' to 'Program' to make sure the field is visible for that User's Profile.

Does the profile have at least Read access to the Custom object?

Arianne - yes the profile has Read, Create, and Edit access for the Program (custom object) and Read access for Opportunities object.

I'm having the same issue while activating the competitor related list on opportuniries. It does not show up in Lightning, but it does however in Classic. Also this competitor field I see nowhere show up anywhere in Salesforce, like forinstance the Field level Security.

What can I still look into to show this related list also in lightning?

William -

For me the issue was that in the Competitor object - make sure that the user has access to the field that links to the Competitor Object via lokup or master-detail.  That was the issue for me.  the answer above links to the more detailed explaination provided by Steve Dodd.

As a alternative solution, we can create new record page and add 'Related lists' component to current page.

Refer below article to create lightning record pages,
