My summary report is not showing the fields it is grouped by in customize
The preview also says there are no records, but when I run the report there are.
Please see the 2 screenshots.

There is no summarised field in your report builder screenshot but there is in your report run screenshot. Is that because you developed the report since taking the screenshot? Or are they different environments, e.g. report run in production but edited in sandbox, hence no data?
I can see 'Details' are selected in the report run, but is that also the case in the builder? If 'Details' are hidden in the report builder, the preview is empty. Click 'Show' next to 'Add Chart' and select 'Details'.
In the builder you should be able to include 'Edit Date' as shown on the report run,click arrow next to it's column header and select 'Group Dates By...' 'Month'.
I cannot see the summarised field in my report builder even though in theory it should. That was the previous screenshot of my report builder. Below is the screenshot of the report run (you should be able to see the difference).
To answer the rest of your questions (and thank you for taking the time to try and help me)
- The screenshots are of the same report, no development happened between the one and the next screenshot (the one from the builder and the one from the report run)
- The reports are not in different environments. They are both in my production environment.
Are you using the standard report type?
I tried building a report using the standard Case History report type in a Development Edition org and was able to group by Edit Date in months (and get a preview!):
It doesn't look like a complex report, can you try building it from scratch?
Well that was happening, since typing the above I did some more testing and now it's ok!
Try yours - see what you get!
I know the you can get rid of the grouping if you remove all the columns and start over but that is not very practical.
