New Record type best practice?

Hi
I'm looking to create a new record type on a Renewal object which currently doesn't have any record types.
I need a new page layout, for a subset of user profiles.
My question is i want to maintain the current "master" as well as the new record type i want to create. How is the best way to do this?
Do i need to create 2 record types? To maintain the current page layout and user profile alignment?
I don't want to affect the current renewal object setup as this has been in place for years.

Regards
Darren

Hi Darren ,
You can maintain Master and Create new Record Type.
Provide Access to right record type and page layouts using Page Layout Assignment.
Create 2 Record Types and Page Layout and Assign them to intended users based on profiles.

Ok i've created the 2 record types - master renewal is the default.
So now when i go to create a new renewal i would expect to see 2 options but i still get the Connect Renewal page layout without any options to select which reocrd type.
Even though both are active.
Any ideas?

Hi Darren ,
Provide an access to these two record Types on your Profile.
