if A is master of B then if you need to change this master detail relationship to lookup then you only need to click on setup ->

obeject;> master detail field > Edit> now you will not be able to see button "change field type" if there is Roll up summary field on Master objetc so delete it first and also remove it from "deleted fied" trash box then you will be able to see"change field type" button.

If you are converting a master-detail relationship to a lookup for a custom object on the “detail” side, the organization-wide default for the object is automatically updated to Public Read/Write. Similarly, converting a lookup to a master-detail-relationship changes the organization-wide default to Controlled by Parent

Hi Sri,

Do you have any rollup summaries on Master ?

You can convert a master-detail relationship to a lookup relationship as long as no roll-up summary fields exist on the master object.

If its there, deleting Roll Up Summaries will allow you to change the field's type without modifying code and without deleting the field or losing data.

Cheers,

Hi Sri,

Apart from the roll up fields and OWD settings, all your existing reports will not work as the existing report types are not valid.
You need to re-create the reports using the new report types (in some cases you need to create new custom report types)

Sri, if you still need to retain the roll-up capabilities after making the change to a lookup relationship, you can use Rollup Helper. Rollup Helper supports roll-up summary fields via lookup relationships. http://appexchange.salesforce.com/listingDetail?listingId=a0N30000009i3UpEAI

Hi,
I have just deleted a roll-up summary that is related to the master detail relationship object. but, the "change field type" button is still not available.  I emptied my rescyle bin and checked that there is nothing there. Does it take some times before the button becomes available again?  This is in my sandbox org. I'm not sure if this matters.

I do have other roll-up summary fields on this master object but, it's related to other object (not the same object above).. Is this causing the issue?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Lia, Did you ever get a resolution to your question? I am running into the same issue. I have removed all rollup fields and Erased them from Deleted fields.

Any help is appreicated.

Converting Relationships:
  • You can convert a master-detail relationship to a lookup relationship as long as no roll-up summary fields exist on the master object.
  • You can convert a lookup relationship to a master-detail relationship, but only if the lookup field in all records contains a value.
