The "Marketing User" checkbox allows the user to create campaigns and use the Campaign Import Wizards (See details: https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewHelpDoc?id=user_fields.htm&language=en_US) whereas the "Marketing Profile" basically just makes the SalesForce UI a bit more Marketing Focused (see details: https://success.salesforce.com/answers?id=90630000000gjSNAAY).  Really most important to make sure the checkbox is checked.  The profile isn't as important and any profile could work if you configured them a certain way.  Many people don't use the Marketing Profile because it is a SalesForce standard profile, so if you want to change other things, you can't because it is a standard profile and can't be changed.

What is the 'Marketing User' check box on the user page?

Knowledge Article Number: 000003658

Description

What is the "Marketing User" check box on the user page?

Resolution

The Marketing User check box on the user profile page indicates whether or not a user has the right to create and manage campaigns including:

- Create a new campaign
- Edit an existing campaign
- Delete an existing campaign
- Update campaign statistics
- Import leads into a campaign*
- Mass update the status for members of a campaign*
- Configure advanced campaign setup to define member status values
- Run campaign reports across multiple campaigns

* In order to use the campaign import wizards, Marketing Users must also have the Marketing User profile (or the "Import Leads" permission in Enterprise Edition organizations).

NOTE: Campaigns are included with Enterprise Edition, and available for an additional cost with Professional Edition. In the Professional Edition one campaigns license is consumed for each user that has the "Marketing User" box checked.

Marketing User Profile

The marketing user profile was created first before campaigns existed.
It contains the ability to import leads and has nothing to do with campaigns.

When campaigns were introduced, they were an add on package. I believe it came bundled with Enterprise edition but for a good few years it was an additional cost for Professional edition.

Just like content, mobile , offline edition etc, campaigns was an additional module which requires a license type. It was possible to buy less campaign licenses then you had full licenses.
I.e A company of 100 employees would only buy 10 marketing user licenses as these 10 were the only people using campaigns.

As the product eventually paid for itself it became free, just like content did a couple of years ago.

The difference between them is in part, a legacy item, but also allows for the granular control an admin may want.

I’ve seen some campaign managers who do not want users importing leads straight into their campaigns. The campaign members are carefully selected so they like to retain control of who enters the campaign
