Mass emailing contacts: "view you specified exceeds the max of 250" what?

I've sent mass emails through contacts a hundred times. These are my steps;
1) go to "contacts"
2) go to "tools"
3) Select a view below that contains the recipients to be included in this email.

Now I'm getting this message after I select a view "
The view that you specified exceeds the maximum of 250. Please narrow your search criteria by editing the view or create a new view."

My view does not have more than 250 contacts in it. What is the problem?

HELP!

Can you post a screenshot of the List View you're using and getting the error on?

Have you tried following the steps in the message (creating a new List View with more restrictive Filter Criteria)?

Exactly how many records does the List View bring back? Run the list view and check it out.

Sorry, but what is "list view"?
I am here:

Step 1. Specify the recipients to include

Select a view below that contains the recipients to be included in this email.

But below view: it says The view that you specified exceeds the maximum of 250. Please narrow your search criteria by editing the view or create a new view.

These are "views' that I've mass emailed countless times before. Each "view" has about 50 contacts associated with it.

How can I run the list view?
THANK YOU!

When you go to the Contacts tab, there is a drop-down there at the top you can select those lists from. Don't go to Tools, but select from the Views drop-down you see at the top of the Contacts tab. Run the view in question from there, then look toward the bottom left of the screen, you'll see the total number of records in the view.

Views will always pull the latest and greatest data, so if you've had new contacts created in your system that meet the view criteria, it is entirely possible that you view results now exceed 250 contacts.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

That totally helped. Now that I figured that out, I need to figure out WHY that happened and who-dun-it.

Turns out our "views" got altered and renamed, so now mass email is not finding that "view".

Thanks, again! Can't mass email til I figure out this bigger problem, now!

Hi Lisa you CAN Mass Email, you just have to create a new view with some filters of it using the instructions I posted.
Lisa LikensLisa Likens
Thanks for the instructions. Yes, you're right, I can mass email. Just need to re-create what was already done.

Basically the "views" we had set up (which we've been using for a long time) were "renamed". So in the contact level we were selecting "start date" which could be 2011ABCD, then we had a "view" called 2011ABCD which would email all contacts with that in the "start date". The "start date" got renamed to something, so now when I select "2011ABCD" in the "view" or "mass email contacts" lists, its not pulling JUST those people, its pulling ALL our contacts.

I need to re-create the views OR rename "start date" back to "start date".

Does this make sense to you? Cause it barely makes sense to me!

@LisaLikens
It doesn't sound like the List Views were "renamed" it sounds more like either the Filter Criteria was loosened to include more records > 250, or if the Filter Criteria wasn't changed then more records that meet the criteria have been added to your SFDC Org.
