Difference between Salesforce.com and Force.com

We have Salesforce.com enterprise edition as well as Force.com Free. I am having difficulties to understand the main difference between these two products.
Do these two editions interact? Is there any connection? What is Force.com Free for?
Thanks for the help!

Daphe,

There are at least three different things going on in your post, from what I can tell

First of all, Salesforce.com is built on the Force.com platform - they are more or less interchangeable from a technical standpoint.  It's a mere matter of marketing semantics.  Force.com applies to the infrastructure and codebase that is the foundation for the entire Salesforce solution.  They are enforcing the Force.com concept more so because Salesforce can do so much more than CRM nowadays.

Secondly, regarding the functionality situation.  In this case I think you are referring to the Force.com Edition in comparison to the standard Salesforce.com Editions (Professional, Enterprise, etc.).  In this case, yes there is a difference.  The Force.com Edition (or Platform Edition, depending on the marketing materials you have in hand, what day of the week it is and whether or not your sneakers have green stripes) is a standard Enterprise Edition (if you buy in conjunction with a full Enterprise Edition) minus the CRM functionality - so no Leads, Opportunities, etc. (as far as I know).  This Platform Edition is aimed at providing customers with the "platform" on which to build custom applications - for companies that do not so much use Salesforce for the CRM.

And lastly, regarding the Developer Edition accounts you created with interests in Salesforce.com customization and Force.com platform - again, just another marketing ploy.  Salesforce uses the preferences you set to send you more targeted information via email regarding the topics of interest to you.

.
Hope this helps.

Hi Daphne,

Salesforce license is designed for users who require full access to standard CRM and Force.com AppExchange apps. Users with this user license are entitled to access any standard or custom app.
Force.com license allows uses to use the force.com platform to build custom applications, it would give limited access to standard objects (Accounts, Contacts, etc.,)

See this link for more details : https://ap1.salesforce.com/help/doc/en/users_understanding_license_types.htm

Hi Daphne,

The essential differrence is that Salesforce.com provides various types of CRM License like  Limited Edition,Professional Edition etc where as Force.com is a platform which is used to build cloud based Application..

Moreover Salesforce.com is built using Force.com..

As far as price is concerned Force.com Licenses are cheaper than Salesforce.com License..

Thanks,
Tulika

Hi Dalphie
Salesforce introduced Salesforce.com cloud based CRM and Force.com platform for Salesforce developers.. It is true that Salesforce.com is built in Force.com platform and not only Salesforce.com instead a number of apps have been developed through Force.com platform. Force.com is a platform, while Salesforce.com is CRM and is used for various sales operation execution needs. So, if you are asking about technicalities of both then on the ground level you can say that Salesforce is based on Force.com.
There are many Salesforce experts, who can provide you complete details and guidance about both and even more than this. You can contact to any experienced Salesforce trainer to know the details.  You can check any learning center like Janbask, they can also provide you complete solution about Salesforce

Hi,
Force.com is the platform on which developers can build custom Salesforce application and thus a service offering of Salesforce. The exact difference between Salesforce (http://kosmiktechnologies.com/sales-force-training-in-hyderabad/).com and Force.com is explained in the below paragraph.
Salesforce is the company (Salesforce.com) which provides cloud computing services. They provide service in two flavors: SaaS ( Software as a Service ) and PaaS (Platform as a service ).

thanks

Salesforce is a company that provides you with the license to use their CRM system.

Force.com is a platform which is used to build applications to customize your current CRM system. Salesforce was also built by using Force.com.
