adding primary contact info to related account

i want to be able to see the primary contact and their email address in each associate account. i tried using a formula to automatically populate a "primary contact" field in my accounts, but i've been woefully unsuccessful. 

any idea how to accomplish this? otherwise, i'll need to do a lookup in each account to choose the primary contact.
(my dream idea was to use a checkbox in the contact to designate it the "primary contact" but i haven't been able to craft the right formula to make it happen.

The trick is to create a custom Lookup Relationship field called "Primary Contact" on your Account page, and make this look up to Contact.  You can then make formula fields that refer to the Primary Contact field (for instance to show its email address, phone number, etc.) -- you'll find that once you have that lookup field, you can use the formula builder to add its fields into your formula.

I actually did do that, thank you-- I was just hoping to auto-populate (is that the term?) a field in the account when I designate a contact as the primary contact b/c it's time consuming to enter a contact then go into the account to lookup the contact... Seems to me if I can designate a contact as a "primary contact" it could theoretically show up in the account via some kind of formula... You'd need to use code to autopopulate Primary contact on Account when you select it on the Contact.
