In short they mean the same thing but the last 3 digits of the 18 translates the info hidden in upper/lower cases of the 15 id.

The biggest difference is that the Id-15 is Case Sensitive, and the Id-18 is not.

SteveMo and Brian are right on.  I believe that salesforce started off with 15 unique identifier then expanded into 18 digit unique identifier.  I always use the 18 digit unique identifier to play it safe.

Hi Barbara,
After API version 2.5 salesforce by default uses 18 digit id for accessing data via API route. However, tools which can query salesforce data directly can use 15 digit id OR 18 digit id.
