Workflow field update from Salesforce for Outlook Email

I am trying to use a workflow rule to populate fields on a new task created when an Email brought in with Salesforce for Outlook is associated with a record. All emails go to Unresolved items, and when associated with a record, a historic activity task is created. I am trying to get some fields on the new task to populate with specific values using a workflow rule with field updates, but none of the updates happen. This leads me to think the rule is not even firing. Evaluation Criteria is "Only when a record is created" and the Rule Criteria is "Activity Origin Type equals Email to Salesforce." I have also attempted to use Subject Starts with "Email:" but that doesn't work either.  Anyone with any ideas about getting this workflow and field updates to work with Salesforce for Outlook email messages and creation of a new task?  Thanks.

I was using trigger after insert event to do this kind of updates.

trigger Task_Email_To_Lead on Task (after insert) {}

Hi Tim,

Did you ever figure this one out?  I'm looking to do something similar but it seems that Workflows don't run when created by the Email to SalesForce function.

Thanks!

No...you are correct in that workflows do not work in this case. As the other answer suggested, even my SFDC team suggested writing a Trigger to populate the desired fields, but that's not in my skill set and haven't pursued it any further.

That the rules for new Task don't fire on Outlook for Salesforce (no option for us, either) is just one of a couple ways it has lost functionality from the older Outlook integration.

I am new to SalesForce and am trying to do something similar. I found this in Ideas if you would like to promote it:

Hi Tim, I think ContactMonkey does what you need. It allows to:
- view and edit any Salesforce record right within the outlook inbox.
- create task, log a call add event.

Check it out: http://www.contactmonkey.com/salesforce-for-outlook They have free trial.
