The more we prepare for transition to lightning the more stupid things come up that are available in Classic that are not in Lightning. This is yet another small thing that should have been done that peeves users off. Hopefully fixed next release (but more likely done in 5 to 20 releases)

Yes, it is more efficient to only load the number of items that can fit in one screen, but this isn't a Twitter or Facebook newsfeed. Users treat this like a database, and it should act like one. This includes getting a total number of records in the list in an easy fashion.

This causes our users a lot of frustration. They routinely have a need to see how many records are in the List View without having to scroll all the way to the bottom. If there are 1,570 records it can take a significant amount of time to get to that number. And worse, if there are more than 2,000 records they can spend five minutes scrolling and still not know how many records there are. Please fix this.
