I think this is a great idea and rather than OOO notifications after the post, I would love to see a small notification while writing to the @mentioned person that they are currently ooo. Similar to the notification when mentioning a person on a post in a Private group and they are not a member.

When adding a name to Chatter, Salesforce shows the user name and title. By editing the Title in the User Profile (under setup), you can replace the title with "Out of Office - Sep 4 through 8. Please contact XXX." This Out of Office message will appear next to your name when someone goes to Chatter you.

Not sure if we've oversimplified it in our company, but we simply told people to go to their Profile's Contact Info and append the dates when they will be away on to their last name. Anytime someone @mentions or writes on the person's wall or assigns a task to this person, their full name shows as: "@Ingrid Protacio (AWAY UNTIL AUG 3)" ... so the assigner/mentioner/chatter knows that the person is away, therefore managing their expectations in terms of response speed.
This work-around was simple and seems to work for most people, without much hassle, since:
- communication is clear
- execution is no more than 2 steps
- covers @mentions, tasks and wall chatter
Instructions we've provided:
Are you going away? Concerned that someone will Chatter you OR Send you a task while you're away?
Go to the Top Right where your name shows, Click Edit Contact Info > Click on About Tab > Append your last name to show (AWAY FROM OFFICE <Dates>). Then Save.
This will ensure that when someone @mentions you or assigns a Task to you, it will show in your name in order to manage their expectations on replying
i.e. @Ingrid Protacio (AWAY FROM OFFICE MARCH 10)

The lack of out of office notification on @mentions is killing our implementation of Chatter! Our sales cycle time is suffering because no one knows if the person they @mentioned is out of the office. It is simply not practical to check the person's profile before @mentioning them each time (and even if it was, asking people to remember to change their picture as well as set their email out of office is clunky and time consuming), and the app exchange solution only works when you post on someone's profile, not if you @mention them.
We REALLY need a simple check box in Chatter to be clicked when someone is out, with an option to add dates - ideally this would then give an on screen message when someone is @mentioned, similar to the one that appears if you @mention someone who doesn't have access to the group / object you're @mentioning them from, to say that they won't get the message.
Please consider bringing this up to the top of the priority list?!

Great idea. Just checked on AppExchange, and the only one available on there is only for when someone posts to your profile. We really need it to be when you are @mentioned, otherwise it wouldn't be any good for us. Really looking forward to seeing this functionality added soon!

I really don't understand this, how can we move people away from email as much as possible, in favor of Chatter if there's no properly working (i.e. also acting on mentions, replies etc, not only on posting to the persons wall) OOO solution available. The above mentioned app is really a bad bad bad work-around and by far not replacing a proper OOO solution. Pls reconsider this.

The Chatter OOO solution is great if someone posts to your wall, but we use @mentions often so it does not help there. If a user had the ability to update their profile that they were out of the office, then when someone else @mentions them from Chatter or Chatter feed in an object, they would be alerted at that time.

Quick update from our Product Team: This idea is still under consideration, however we don't foresee being able to work on it in the next year given our current set of priorities. That being said there is a free Chatter OOO solution available on the AppExchange that could address the need in the meantime.
