    Yes, we are running into the exact scenario, if we can update existing picklists to use the global picklist, that will be very helpful and remove a lot of duplicates.

    There should be the ability to at least change the Global Value Set understanding that you can't go back once this option is engaged.  Please at least make it clear to others trying this functionality that it is permant including the Global Value Set associated.  

    Now we are having multiple Global Values Sets with the same options.

    Unfortunately partial delivery isn't good enough. We have a Market Segment field that appears on both the Lead and Account objects. The Lead field was assigned to the Global Picklist when it was set up, but the Account field wasn't. I just finished an extensive re-vamp to the Global Picklist, but I'm going to have to waste a lot of time doing the same thing to the Account field, because I can't apply the Global Picklist, since the field already exists.

    promoting a picklist to a global picklist is a great feature and it works well if it is the first one, but if you are coming back to exsiting pick lsits that needs to be synced across objects we need to be able to change the value set from individual to global. would love to see this feature added!

    The ability to upgrade existing picklists to global value set is truly appreciated! However, since duplicate picklist fields already exist (especially for Lead mapping) we really need the ability to change an existing picklist field so that it uses the new global value set. 

    For example, I have promoted a field that lives on Account to global value set. The corresponding Lead field needs to have the same options. I certainly can update the Lead list manually when I update the Account list - but just a bummer that I still have to do so. Any plans to work on that as well, Salesforce?

    Just got burned by this also. Upgrading an existing restricted picklist does me no good when I already have the global picklist to which multiple existing picklist fields need to be converted.

    I agree with each and every comment here. This partial delivery is useless. For established orgs with picklists being used in reports, outbound messages, in sytem integrations, it's not only time consuming but risky to have to create new picklists to replace the old ones in all the palces that they're referenced.
    PLEASE consider delivering the idea in the context that it was requested.
