It is absolutely INSANE to me that this thread has been open for 13 years and still no resolution. Seriously!?!?!?!?
How can a third party developer have an app that performs this function but the megacorporation Salesforce can't get it baked in as a standard feature. It's such a glaring ommission in the functionality of the software. So absurd that this has not been implemented. After 13 years, "we'll continue to consider this" is like a slap in the face.

Really keen this idea gets more consideration. Multi select picklists are very useful for our users to flag multiple reasons / topics on Opportunities and Events. The nature of converstaions is that mutli selects work quicker and more effectively for users than a rigid single select. However, management then want clean / easy end reporting on the number of unique selctions to a mutli selevct value and we cannot easily support. Some areas have experimented with alernative approaches like 'main reason' and 'seocndary reasons' single picklist fields but they also do not give an easy workaround and have their own issues!
This has been an issue for so long now i feel a better solution is a must - particularly with oush on Einstein Analytics and improved dashbaording capabilities now being offered.

This idea has been here for thirteen years. So what Salesforce has been doing in the last year is not why this hasn't been implemented yet.
This is a basic feature; if you implement multi-choice picklists, this should be part of the implementation. It should have been present from day 1.
