This is definitely needed, currently we have two full sandboxes that we use for our DEV and UAT environments. If I trigger a refresh of the instances directly after each other I have no way of knowing when they will get completed and if of course they will get completed around the same time. Sort sort of indication or estimation of when the refresh will start and how long to complete would be ideal. Really leaving us in the dark as to when we can expect a refresh to be completed is not great.

This is veryc nice idea. Right now we can only see status ie as Copying we dont know when it is going to complete. Having a status bar of how mucn percent it is completed will be very helpful. As well as it will be very good for all if salesforce gives exact date when refresh will get complete based on backgroung calculation of meta data. As of now as we dont know when refresh is going to complete we are not able address customer accordingly.

What's proposed by Product Managment (John Vogt) would definitely be an improvement.
Will there be an email notification with each status change? I hope so! Otherwise, monitoring will continue to be more painful.
More info would be greatly appreciated, and would cut down on calls to Salesforce Support.
Example: This past weekend:
- Submitted full sandbox refresh request Friday 5:15 PM PDT.
- Sunday - When I called Support, they got back to me and said the Copy had started 6:42 AM PDT Sunday.
- Copy finished 11:23 AM PDT Sunday
- Submitted Activate 11:40 AM PDT Sunday
- Activate complete 11:47 AM PDT Sunday!
For our October 2012 refresh, Submit to ready-for activate was 12 hrs, Submit Activate to Done was 37 hours.
With estimated wait time, and stats on how many jobs are ahead in the queue, you can set expectations and cut down on Help desk calls.
But, again, the expanded statuses will be a great help. Thanks!!

While we aren't addressing progress, specifically, we will be delivering more up to date statuses on your sandbox creation or refresh. We will add the status Pending, for when the copy is in the queue, Processing, for when the refresh is actually in progress, and Suspended or Stopped if issues arise.
We know this isn't exactly what you are looking for, but it is a step in the right direction.
We are in the progress of overhauling our sandbox copy engine. This work needs to complete before we attempt to deliver refresh progress.

I voted for this, however, I just started a full sandbox refresh yesterday and it is still not finished today, so there needs to be an "Expected time to completion" too. Maybe even a calculation function to let you know in advance approximately how long the sandbox refresh will take.
