So heping out in the Answers Community came accross the fact that validation rules ActivityDateTime dont trigger on record creation, the weirdest thing ever.
We did find a WORKAROUND: DATEVALUE(ActivityDateTime) < TODAY()

Was surprised to see I couldn't reference this standard field in a formula field. However as a workaround I took off the required designation off of the field level security on the standard field and then removed the field from my page layouts. I then created a picklist field with my same values and am currently using that in place of the original standard field. Not sure what type of functionality i will lose out on by doing it this way but this field was necessary for the use case I am currently working on. Still evaluating.

So let me get this straight: This very simple idea was posted 10 YEARS ago, SFDC partially delivered the ask in 2014, yet there's been no update since then to alert us as to what was actually done?? Hello? Could SFDC maybe stop the annual Dreamforce to focus on hiring a few thousand extra programmers so we can get these rudimentary ideas implemented?!

Definitely need this capability. The standard Type field is quite important. I was trying to expose the Type field in a custom report type but this is not possible. So a formula field to reference it would be a workaround but we can't even do that unless this idea gets delievered.

Salesforce, what is the status on this? I need to build a formula in the Activities Custom Fields that deciphers if the Task "Type" is a Phone Call or a Visit so that I can total our performance based reports correctly to tally Sales Reps visit vs call volume for their top tier accounts. I find it quite frustrating to see you posted an update 3 years ago saying its targeted for Summer '14 and its still not delivered. We resort to building behind the scene workflows to do field updates which is 4 times the work....
Can someone from Salesforce contact me back with an update for 2017 ????

PS, this was submitted 9 years ago. The idea exchange needs an overhaul. Or maybe a followup mechanism so items like this dont fall through the cracks for 3 years.....
